THREE WRESTLERS PLACE IN TWO TOURNAMENTS IN A ROW

Last weekend was a tough day of wrestling as Hannibal-LaGrange competed at the Missouri Valley College Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Four out of the top ten teams in the NAIA were present including number one ranked Grandview College. Grandview, William Penn and Morningside were all at the Central College Invite the weekend before. Alexander, Downs and Capp all placed in each of the last two tournaments.
165 lb Sophomore Bryce Alexander (23-11)won the Central College Invite two weeks ago and placed third at the MO Valley Invite this week. At Central invite he pinned Jacob Bohler from St. Olaf in the finals. Bohler earlier in the day beat Wildeboer from Morningside who was ranked 12th in the NAIA. This Weekend at the Mo Valley Invite he pinned Kafuba Donzon from Indiana Tech who beat 8th ranked Barkett from Cumberlands (KY). Finishing in third place Alexander’s only loss in the day Saturday was to number one Kevin Hardy from OK City University.
Red shirt sophomore Nathan Downs (18-10) is ranked 5th in the NAIA Central Group. Downs placed 2nd at Central . At the MO Valley Invite Downs placed 7th.
At 184 sophomore Dan Capp (10-7) Placed 2nd at the Central Invitational and 3rd at the MO Valley Invitational. Capp wrestled 197 lbs all first semester. Since wrestling 184 lbs this semester his record is 6-2. Capp took 2nd place at Central Invite to a Basil Minto (NIACC) 3-1 final score. Capp beat Andrew Anthofer (ranked 11th) from Morningside 7-2. In the same tournament after Capp and Anthofer match, Anthofer beat Soderblom(ranked 10) from William Penn 11-3. During a winnable match at the Mo Valley Invite Capp lost his first match of the day to Pontikes from OCU. Pontikes is ranked 8th in the NAIA and Capp lost the match by a score of 3-2. Capp then won three straight matches with a win in the consolation final over Alba from Mckendree. Alba beat Pontikes who Capp had lost to in his first match. Season Preview

The 2011-12 Hannibal-LaGrange University wrestling season is just around the corner! In preparation for the start of regular practices we have ran our regular lifting and conditioning practices and have had some open mats. One highlight over the last couple of weeks was our annual Labor Day camp out. As a team we were able participate in several outdoor activities which included swimming, fishing, boating and geode hunting. This year the Trojans welcome back two sophomores Bryce Alexander and Dan Capp who both tied the HLGU season win record last season with 27 wins. Bryce Alexander, Dan Capp, Ian Taylor, Tommy Pickens and Nathan Downs all return as national tournament qualifiers for the Trojans. Pickens and Downs took a year off and are working diligently to get back into the groove. This year the Trojans will have every weight class filled and will be wrestling off at some weights to see who will claim the top spot at each weight class. This season keep an eye on our new comers like Bobby McCarl (125), Richie Nedlic (125/133),Cole Arms (133), Chucka Willis (141), Cody Bergquist (197), Tyler Cook (HWT). Jake Hare is the most improved returning wrestler for the Trojans from last season and we will see if he can claim the varsity spot at heavy weight this year. We have a few wrestlers who will be redshirting this year and they are Aaron Angel, Mason Hymer, and James Jordan.
