Dubuque, IA - Saturday two Trojan wrestlers braved the snow and the cold weather to travel to north-east Iowa for the Jim Fox Open which is hosted by the University of Dubuque. The rest of the team took advantage of the end of the semester and headed home for the holidays, but Ian Taylor and Dan Capp were rewarded by through their extra effort by placing third in a tough tournament. Both Taylor and Capp suffered losses in their first matches, but both fought back to their consolation final matches. At the end of the day both wrestlers commented that when HLGU’s campus became empty as a result of the end of the semester and the beginning of Christmas break that they were wishing they were home. However, after competing and finishing as high as only one other previous Trojan Wrestler finished, both Capp and Taylor expressed satisfaction in the fact that they made the choice to compete on this Saturday when other wrestlers chose not to compete. Congratulations Capp and Taylor!

Trojan Wrestling Signs 4 time State Qualifier
After completing Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training for the Missouri National Guard Corey, Strope is starting out his education and college wrestling career with the Trojans. After a year off of wrestling and completing his military training Strope is chomping at the bit to get back in the circle of competition. Strope’s last match as a Fatima Comet ended in victory in the Missouri State Tournament’s consolation finals. Strope finished 3rd in MO State Tournament both his Junior and Senior seasons and was a qualifier both his freshmen and sophomore season.
“Strope was one of the first recruits who attended either our Trojan Wrestling Clinics or Trojan Wrestling Camps. I saw very quickly his competitive spirit and his desire to improve his technique. I was disappointed that Strope didn’t join us last season, but the path he chose before joining us in serving our state and country in the National Guard is an honorable one. Corey was a very competitive wrestler in high school, and I’m glad to have him now as compared to never! Corey knows college wrestling is a big step up, but we both believe he can come into our program and help make a difference in the coming years” said HLG Head Wrestling Coach Scott Hawes. Strope compiled an impressive overall record of 128-29 as a Comet. Strope’s Junior year record was36-6 and had a Senior season record of 38-1.Strope will be wrestling at 149 pounds next season for the Trojans.
Strope plans on majoring in Physical Education at HLGU.
Corey is the son of Michael and Irene Strope.

First Member of the 2011 HLGU Recruiting Class
Hannibal, MO – The Hannibal-LaGrange University wrestling program is pleased to have signed Cody Bergquist from Allendale, MI. Bergquist will graduate from Allendale High School in May of 2011.
Bergquist goes down in history as the first signee for newly renamed Hannibal-Lagrange University and the 2011 HLGU recruiting class. Bergquist has wrestled at heavyweight for his entire career for the Allendale Falcons. Bergquist has garnered a 48-19 record and with a Junior year season record of 31-13. After not competing in his sophomore season Bergquist made it to the OK Silver Conference finals and finished in second place last season.
“Last summer I got a chance to know Cody at our Trojan Wrestling Camp and was impressed with his character and hard work. With Cody’s MHSAA All-State Academic honors he has demonstrated that he is solid academically and will be likely to have the grades to help fill a spot at heavyweight that we have struggled to fill over the last two seasons. Big men are hard to come by and I‘m excited to see Bergquist develop into a solid heavyweight in college”, said HLGU Head Wrestling Coach Scott Hawes.
Along with Bergquist’s wrestling accomplishment he has also excelled in football and has been recognized as an OK Silver All-Conference center for Allendale High School football.
Bergquist will be majoring in Bible at HLGU.
Bergquist is the son of Keith and Lisa Bergquist.

Lindenwood University Open Results
The Lindenwood Tournament has some of the best NAIA schools present, as well as D-1 schools like Mizzou, Illinois, and Oklahoma. The competition was fierce but we showed up and wrestled well. We only took six wrestlers due to eligibility and injuries. Almost every Trojan found success and won at least one match. We had some wrestlers who won even more. Freshmen Dan Capp won two straight matches to put him in the quarter-finals. He also ended up pushing a wrestler from one of the top NAIA schools so hard the wrestler had to take an “injury” time out.
As a team, this was the highest win percentage we have had in the history of Hannibal La-Grange Wrestling. All of the wrestlers, whether winning or losing, showed great sportsmanship and heart. We have a lot more wrestling ahead of us and it’s going to be great to see what these men can do. Each one of them works hard in the room and they push each other with great intensity.
This Thursday evening November 4, 2010, we will be wrestling at Missouri Baptist at 7:00p.m. After that we will be heading to Dubuque, IA to wrestle in the Loras College Tournament.

THANK YOU LES ANDERSON!
Yesterday afternoon I had the opportunity to talk some marketing strategies for HLG wrestling with Bryan Van Kley who is the Publisher of WIN Magazine. Bryan has been most helpful in helping me promote HLG wrestling to the masses through WIN Magazine. While we were talking about the topic of recruiting Bryan mentioned to me as an upcoming resource for recruiting at http://www.thewrestlingsite.com/ which was started by former Iowa State Assistant Coach Less Anderson. What caught my attention about thewrestlingsite.com was the indirect relationship I have Les Anderson. Now I have never met Les Anderson, but I had heard about him many times from my college wrestling coach, Ben Peterson. Coach Peterson is well known by his former wrestlers for telling stories about his time on the Iowa State team and his time wrestling in the World and Olympic competitions. Some of those stories told by Ben included Les Anderson. Although I was never coached by Les I believe some of his influence must have rubbed off on Ben and indirectly rubbed off on me. After listening to some of the testimonials of Gable and Peterson about Les Anderson’s influence in their lives and for our beloved sport, it hit me that in a way Les is like a wrestling grandfather to me. ;-) I know it sounds weird, but let me explain. Ben Peterson taught me a ton about wrestling and in wrestling Ben was a father figure to me. As college coaches, Coach Nichols and Coach Anderson were some of Ben’s wrestling father figures which would make me, in a sense, a wrestling grandson. So I decided to investigate what one of my wrestling grandfathers, who I never met, was still doing for the sport of wrestling. I looked around at some of the resources that were available to wrestlers who want to get better at wrestling. As I looked, I found some resources and articles aimed specifically at high school wrestlers and parents. Click on this link to read the articles! There is also a feature that is being developed for wrestlers to develop a type of wrestling resume. This way college coaches can find out about wrestlers who may want to break into college wrestling, but haven’t had the opportunity to be seen. I already utilize online recruiting sites, but thewrestlingsite.com is a wrestling specific site and may potentially be utilized by more high school wrestlers. In 2008-09 school year the National Federation of State High School Associations did a study which reported that there were 273,403 high school wrestlers. Wrestling has more high school male wrestlers participating since the 1980’s. When comparing the 08-09 high school participation figures to the 08-09 NCAA participation report which list only 6,522 wrestling participants there is a huge disparity in participants. I must point out that we could include NAIA school and Jr. College programs to this number to make it greater; however it doesn’t change the fact that there is still a huge disparity between wrestler’s participation in high school compared to college. We could spend some time debating whether or not half of the number of high school wrestlers could even compete at the college level, or if they would be academically fit for college programs, or has title IX taken away too many opportunities, which would all be good discussions. However, there are many college programs such as Hannibal-LaGrange College who could benefit from some wrestlers who may not be a D-1 wrestler in ability or academically, but could find a wrestling home in our program and have a great experience wrestling in college and even have a shot at a NAIA national title all the while accruing a solid college education. I think Les Anderson is trying to help bridge the communication gap between the 10’s of thousands of high school wrestlers who want a college wrestling opportunity, but haven’t heard of a place like Hannibal-LaGrange College where they can wrestle. I know as a college coach I would take advantage of a resource such as thewrestlingsite.com is trying to develop. I hope these resources provided by Les Anderson will be helpful for anyone considering wrestling in college especially those who are considering wrestling for Hannibal-LaGrange College! To someone I have never met and continues working to make wrestling better Thank You Grandpa Les Anderson!;-)

Freshmen Have Arrived!
Our new class of HLG Trojan wrestlers has arrived on campus and they have already been making a difference in the community as they were involved in the Helping Hands Community service projects across Hannibal. All of the freshmen wrestlers were involved in this community service project and they weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. Freshmen Bryce Alexander told about his experience helping clean up a home damaged by a flood where they had to clean up a dead possum. What an experience! Classes started Tuesday and Open mat started yesterday. This weekend all the wrestlers will be enjoying a camp out for the Labor Day weekend. Tuesday will start the first day of lifting and condition. We will be posting our roster with photos by the end of next week. -Coach Hawes

I’ve had wrestlers in the past with similar ability and experience as Artwaun surprise many more experienced wrestlers. They were able to have success because of hard work, desire, and sheer toughness. Steele is naturally a good athlete and at Trojan Wrestling Camp this summer showed that he is tough, works hard, has desire, and picks up technique very quickly. I’m looking forward to seeing Artwaun develop as a college wrestler!,” said HLG head wrestling Coach Scott Hawes. Steele will be wrestling at 149 lbs for the Trojans next season. Coach Hawes Quoted On His Participation in the NWCA Coach's Leadership Academy
By Tammy Tedesco
It has been ten months since the inaugural NWCA Coaching Leadership Academy has taken place. Even with that gap in time, the participating coaches and mentors picked up right where they left off.
With the challenging economy threatening many Olympic sports over the past 2 years, it is time for the coaches to find ways to be creative in raising the necessary funds to help support their program. This is just one of the topics that were focused on during this two day workshop.
Coaches from thirteen schools along with nine mentors convened for this two-day conference in Edwardsville, Illinois at the Jon Davis Wrestling Center. (Click here for previous release)
The NWCA has awarded a “full scholarship” to each of these coaches allowing them to attend the Leadership Academy for FREE! This funding was provided by a few very generous benefactors of the NWCA who believe the head coach plays a pivotal role in protecting the future of amateur wrestling.
Mark Mestemacher who hosted this Academy was also among the guest speakers. He communicated a fantastic message to the coaches about why he has invested in the sport of wrestling. Essentially, he believes wrestling teaches many valuable life skills and further, his investment in the sport has allowed him to share his faith with others. He reminded the coaches that successful people routinely do things that push them out of their comfort zones.
Another key point that Mestemacher shared with the participating coaches was to become active in their respective regions so the community leaders are aware that their programs exist.
Each coach worked very closely with their peers and mentors through small group discussion to help customize the general concepts being taught to meet their unique needs on their respective campuses.
This workshop is just part of the process that these coaches have completed. In addition, each coach will eventually complete ten online educational modules, a program assessment survey, and a 360 evaluation designed to solicit feedback from constituents they are accountable to.
Scott Hawes, head coach at Hannibal-LaGrange College stated that, “As a coach of a new program, I was fortunate to be able to attend the NWCA Coaching Leadership Academy. I benefited from the experiences shared by veteran coaches who were part of starting new programs and/or reviving fledgling programs. Their perspectives came from every level of the NCAA and NAIA. The insights I received will help equip me to develop a program that will stand the test of time.”
Having these coaches and administrators openly discuss ethical situations in a non judgmental and encouraging ways was particularly engaging for the coaches. They were able to help break down some of the more challenging issues that hinder them daily in their coaching profession, while exposing the realization that each coach faces many of the same challenges despite the size of the institution.
This academy gives the coaches an opportunity to grow professionally and realize that being a college wrestling coach involves much more than teaching takedowns and winning matches.
“We instill in our athletes the need for consistent evaluation and improvement. So why wouldn’t any coach take this opportunity from the NWCA to better themselves. That is exactly what the Leadership Academy does – gives you direction for growth,” said Brandon Brissette head coach at Olivet College.
The thirty coaches, who began this journey back in August of 2009, will “graduate” in front of their peers at the 2010 NWCA Convention.
“Finalizing the inaugural NWCA Coaching Leadership Academy is something that all of us at the NWCA are very proud of. The sport of wrestling has needed this type of camaraderie and education for years and these coaches have paved the way for many future coaches,” said Mike Moyer, NWCA Executive Director.
“These past few days have given us a lot of encouragement and momentum to help maximize the experience for the next group that we have starting in August.”
The NWCA Coaches Leadership Academy will start with a fresh group of coaches and mentors for the 2010 Academy which will take place August 4-5, in Delray Beach, Florida. Following the Leadership Academy will be the NWCA Convention, for more information visit www.nwcaonline.com.

After transferring from Henderson High School in Kentucky and coming out of seemingly nowhere, Alexander surprised many Missouri wrestlers with his success on the mat as he represented Maryville High School. Alexander compiled impressive records of 42-1 during both his junior and senior seasons of competition at Maryville High School. Alexander will be the first ever 2 time Missouri State Champion to wrestle for HLG. To accompany Alexander’s monumental achievement in the Missouri state tournament he has also been recognized by every one of his school’s wrestling programs as the school’s most valuable wrestler from 7th through 12th grades. “I’m really excited that Bryce has decided to be part of making history here at HLG. His achievements on the mat speak for itself. He is a really, really good high school wrestler. Bryce knows college wrestling is a big step up, but we both believe he can come into our program and help make a difference right away” said HLG Head Wrestling Coach Scott Hawes. Alexander will be wrestling at 157 pounds next season for the Trojans.

Capp Signs with HLG
Hannibal, MO - The Hannibal-LaGrange College Wrestling program is pleased to have signed Daniel Capp from Kansas City, MO. Capp will graduate from Winnetonka High School in May of 2010.

His junior year season was cut short due to an injury. Capp capped off his senior season taking 5th in the state tournament. Capp also was a Brute Nationals All-American and set an all time Winnetonka High School record of most escapes in a single season. “Dan Capp is a smart wrestler and a hard worker. Capp improved every season of his high school career and he knows how to work through the disappointment of injury as a result of his Junior Season experience. Capp didn’t stay down after his injury he bounced back and I’m looking forward to him making this next step of wrestling for HLG. NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HOSTED IN CEDAR RAPIDS FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 2011 and 2012 NAIA Wrestling National Championships presented by the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau will be hosted by the U.S. Cellular Center, announced by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) office on Thursday. The events will occur in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with the 2011 Championship from March 3-5 and the 2012 event from March 1-3.
"The NAIA is proud to send the Wrestling National Championships for the next two years to a place like Cedar Rapids," said NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr. "With the proud and storied tradition of wrestling in the state of Iowa, I have no doubt that the student-athletes and all involved will have a terrific experience.”
The U.S. Cellular Center is considered Eastern Iowa’s premiere venue. The 7,800 seat facility hosts several recognizable sporting events, including the 2010 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships and the Iowa State High School Dual Team Wrestling Tournament. In addition, ice shows, concerts and rodeos are a regular occurrence. The arena first opened in 1979 as the Five Seasons Center and in 2000, the name was changed to U.S. Cellular Center. For more information, click here. The Convention & Visitors Bureau specializes in attracting guests to the Cedar Rapids area. For more information, click here
"The city of Cedar Rapids and the U.S. Cellular Center have hosted successful collegiate wrestling national championships over the past few years,” said Scott McClure, NAIA Manager of Championship Sports. “They have the experience and the resources to put on outstanding NAIA championship events and we look forward to partnering with them for the next two years.”
The state of Iowa has hosted six previous Wrestling Championships with all taking place in Sioux City. Most recently, Sioux City hosted the event from 2005-08. The NAIA estimates that 5,000-8,000 fans attend the wrestling championships each year.
”The Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to welcome the athletes, coaches, families and fans who will travel to Cedar Rapids for the NAIA Wrestling Championships in 2011 and 2012,” said Mary Lee Malmberg, Director of Sports Tourism at the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We look forward to showing them our brand of Midwestern hospitality as well as our love for the sport of wrestling.”
The Championship consists of 10 individual weight classes with five different sessions during the three-day span. Wrestlers qualify for the Championships in one of three ways: placing in the top four in any weight class at the Qualifying Group tournament; having a .666 or better winning percentage against four-year accredited intercollegiate competition provided he participates in a minimum of 12 matches during the regular season; through an intercollegiate tournament during the season. For more information on qualification, click here.
In the history of the sport, there have been 19 national team champions as first-time winner, Notre Dame (Ohio), won the 2010 Championship. The first NAIA Wrestling National Championship occurred in 1958, hosted in Mankato, Minn. The host school, Mankato State (Minn.) won the inaugural title. Currently, 38 varsity programs sponsor wrestling in the NAIA.

Reflection on the NAIA National Tournament
The NAIA National Wrestling Tournament was a much anticipated new experience for HLG wrestlers. This year the five wrestlers who qualified for the national tournament were Kasey Cates, Tommy Pickens, Josh Smith, Jobi Hambrick, and Nathan Downs. All, with the exception of Josh Smith, competed in the National Tournament. Smith withdrew from the national tournament because of personal reasons. We entered the national tournament very banged up from the season. Kasey Cates injured his knee right before Christmas Break and it continued to bother him through the national tournament. He even took off much of the month of December to let his knee rest. After qualifying for the national tournament in the last tournament before Christmas Break Tommy Pickens had returned to campus second semester with a desire to be prepared for the National Tournament. But his hopes were dashed when he was diagnosed with having Mono just a week into the second semester. Having my own career cut short as a result of mono, I was pleasantly surprised to see Tommy Pickens have the will to come back from such a terrible sickness. As a coaching staff we did not make Tommy wrestle he wrestled because he had a will to compete. Jobi Hambrick struggled throughout the season with minor injuries as any wrestler would struggle. Towards the end of the season and especially in the consolations finals of our Central Regional Tournament Jobi injured his shoulder. Nathan Downs was thrown in the last tournament before Christmas Break and landed head first on the mat. As a result of the impact Nathan had nagging pain in his neck and shoulder region of his back. Nathan did visit the doctors and had them check it out and they told him that the injury was not serious but he would continue to have pain throughout the rest of the season until he healed completely. These injuries are not uncommon to our sport of wrestling although it is disappointing when the injuries do impact virtually every wrestler we had qualified for the national tournament. I do not bring up these injuries to make excuses for a poor performance at the national tournament but instead to highlight how these wrestlers worked through tough circumstances and continued to compete even thought they knew they were at a disadvantage. It was because of that spirit of competition I believe these wrestlers have the potential to accomplish even greater things in years to come. If anyone wants to see the individual results of the tournament follow this link. Two matches I want to highlight from the tournament were matches that Kasey Cates and Nathan Downs wrestled. Cates first match of the tournament was against a tough wrestler from MO Baptist who Casey had previously defeated twice in the regular season. The fact that he was able to stay mentally focused and defeat him a third time is very commendable. The highlight of that match was one in which no score was awarded as Casey completed the nicest lateral throw of his career. I think it is the only one that I have ever seen him do in a match. Unfortunetly the throw was completed out of bounds. Nathan Downs’s record in the National Tournament does not show the improvement on the season from the beginning to the end. Nathan wrestled Junior Robbie Hicklin from Lindenwood University who had pinned him at the Lindenwood Open at our first tournament of the season. Hicklin went on and claimed 3rd place. It was apparent that Downs had his work cut out for him at the national tournament having to once again face Hicklin. Downs demonstrated throughout the match that he had improved tremendously throughout the season. At one point in the match Downs had Hicklin flat on his back in a defensive pin situation which the official clearly missed. By the end of the match Downs’ conditioning showed as Hicklin was tiring. Even though Downs still lost the match he showed signs of great improvement over his previous performance against the same tough opponent. The final highlight of our trip to the National Tournament was watching Zach Fish’s participation in the Champions of Character wrestling clinic. Fish was honored with the nomination of HLG’s representative for Champions of Character. There were about 60 wrestlers who participated in this special wrestling clinic hosted free of charge for Oklahoma City area high school wrestling programs. After our return from Oklahoma City the wrestlers all went their separate ways as they had the opportunity to go on to their spring break.

Trojan Wrestlers Place At The NAIA Central Regional Tournament
Cates’ (unseeded) first round match was against Bryan Williams of York College who he defeated by 8-5. In the second round Cates was matched up against the #1 seed, Jerry Garner from Oklahoma City University. Cates lost 11-7 to Garner. After dropping down to the consolation bracket Cates won matches over Brett Delich from Baker University by fall and once again over Bryan Williams. In this rematch, Williams defaulted in the second period as a result of an injury suffered in the first period. Kates two straight wins were enough to claim the consolation championship.
Jobi Hambrick, 5th seed, entered the Central Regional Tournament with the more wins than any other freshmen in the NAIA. Coach Hawes commented on Hambrick’s seeding for the Central Regional Tournament. “I believed he was the 3rd best wrestler in the region, but because of criteria he only was able to be seeded 5th. Hambrick was beaten soundly by # 3 seed Jacob Guernsey from MO Valley at the Grand View Tournament this year.” Guernsey is also ranked 11th at 174 lbs in the season's final NAIA national rankings. Coach Hawes also stated,” I had to coach another wrestler who was wrestling at the same time as Hambrick, I did not see Jobi’s entire match verses Guernsey, but the part that I did see I noticed that he was making some mistakes that could have made the difference in the match. I believed that Hambrick could have beaten Guernsey if he would have wrestled smarter.” Having a bye in the first round, Hambrick’s first victory came in the second round over #4 seed Gabe Vasquez from Waldorf College with the score of 9-4. Hambrick lost his second match by fall to the eventual outstanding wrestler and #1 seed, Glenn Rhees, from Grand View College. Then Hambrick’s next match was in the consolation semifinals verses Clarence Jordan from Baker University. Hambrick beat Jordan soundly with the score of 9-3. In the consolation finals Hambrick was in position to prove that he was the 3rd best wrestler in the NAIA’s Central Region against an opponent he could have beaten earlier in the season Jacob Guernsey. The match began with Guernsey taking a number of low shots on Hambrick which he was able to deflect until about one minute left in the period when Hambrick was taken down. Hambrick responded with an escape shortly after the take down and the first period was finished. In the second period Hambrick chose down and set the tempo for the rest of the match. Hambrick was able to score a reversal and then Guernsey scored an escape. After the escape Hambrick responded by returning Guernsey to the mat with a takedown. The score going into the third period was 5-3 with Hambrick in the lead. Guernsey had over one minute in riding team so the score was really 5-4. Guernsey was starting to look fatigued and he chose down to start the third period. Hambrick was able to ride down Guernsey’s built up riding time, but he gave up a penalty point for locked hands. Guernsey almost scored with the free move situation but the referee stopped the match for the locked hands restart. After a series of flurries Hambrick held on with the victory over the 11th ranked Jacob Guernsey.
Tommy Pickens, Josh Smith, and Nathan Downs will be joining Cates and Hambrick to Okalahoma City University March 4th for the 2010 NAIA National Championships.

“As wrestlers prepare for the important post season championship season , the NWCA and our partner, Hibiclens, wanted to provide you with some simple, practical tips for keeping your wrestlers free from skin infection. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions and good luck with your post season competition.” Mike Moyer, NWCA Executive Director
Tournaments and Prevention:
The risks of skin infections after a tournament are significant. Since wrestlers are the athletes most likely to carry potentially harmful bacteria on their skin, the risk of exposure compounds exponentially during a tournament.
Here are some steps to reduce the risk:
Have wrestlers shower with Hibiclens prior to the start of the tournament
Hibiclens remains active on the skin for up to 6 hours after washing[1]
Washing with Hibiclens prior to contact with contaminated skin and surfaces will significantly reduce the risk of contamination that can lead to a serious infection[2].
If a shower is not reasonable, have wrestlers wash hands, arms and faces with Hibiclens prior to wrestling. This represents the primary areas of skin to skin contact during the match.
Use Hibistat wipes between or during the match when there is not water available.
Please feel free to contact Hibiclens with any questions you may have:
